Burnet High School senior middle blocker Zaria Solis solidified her commitment to Texas Lutheran University by signing her National Letter of Intent March 4.

“When I first went there, it felt like home,” Solis said. “It didn’t feel like home on any other campus.”

Simply, Solis could have had her pick between volleyball and basketball. Solis has been a first team all-district selection and district Most Valuable Player in both. But one difficult moment led to her decision to pursue a volleyball scholarship, she said.

“When we lost to China Spring (in the Class 4A volleyball regional quarterfinals Nov. 6),” she said. “It confirmed my decision that I’m not done with volleyball.”

She noted her time on the basketball court was well spent. She was named the district’s Most Valuable Player during the 2022-23 season and shared the honor with teammate MaeSyn Gay at the end of the 2023-24 season. She even played select basketball during the summer.

“I trained for basketball year around,” she said. “When I started getting into volleyball, it feels like home. I feel like I belong on the volleyball court.”

She is the Burnet Lady Dawgs’ leader in blocks for a season and a career with 271 in two-and-a-half years on the varsity.

She was named all-state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Among the colleges Solis visited included Huston-Tillotson University and Odessa College.

The daughter of Deanna Solis and Jimmy Solis plans to major in business with the aim of having a career in real estate and interior design.
